Contemporary Nudes
When I was in my early teens, I heard a statement that was a quote from Michelangelo the artist..
"If you can draw or paint the human figure, you are capable of drawing or painting anything.''
That statement from Michelangelo impacted me then and still does because I knew it to be real for me then as it is now.
In high school I involved myself with fashion design which involved drawing and painting creations on models, and then while attending the university of Wisconsin, I took anatomy and life drawing and got totally hooked on both. I couldn't get enough, even with the exacting and painstaking requirements of muscle origin and insertion for every muscle in the human body, along with bone structure.
A slight twist of the wrist of dip of the shoulder would initiate a whole new set of challenges. I later incorporated my life drawing experiences into latge paintings of male and female nudes done with large brushes and washes of cool colors to later be accented with thick dabs of bright paint in special places.
Today, I experience a joy and abandonment in executing my nude paintings. The human form is so much a part of me that I do not have to use human models to draw or paint from. Ideas just roll out of me. I also like to try different combinations of materials as is evidence in the enamel, spray paint and permanent marker paintings, and in the mixed media paintings on paper. I am stimulated by working on different sizes of paintings, and different painting surfaces.
I enjoy the curves and sensuous lines of the female body. On occasion, I also paint the male form, but for me, the female form is so advantageous to the twist of the brush and the flow of the paint. Sheer joy, and dropping the analytical mind so abundantly enhance the flow of my creativity---especially when holding and moving the paint brush. I hope you feel and see the excitement and deeply abiding regard I have for the human body as you view my works.
